Sierra La Laguna

The Sierra La Laguna is an amazing sierra near the southern tip of Baja. These sierra had been an island many eons ago and continue to be a "Sky Island" with many endemic species and subspecies including the Cape Pygmy-owl.

"Baja California Sur vehemently OPPOSES the Paredones Amarillos open pit gold mine because of the irreparable damage it will cause to our community and the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve. Vista Gold was given 15 days to appeal the decision by SEMARNAT to deny the zoning permit for the open pit gold mine in the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere Reserve. The time limit for the appeal has expired and Vista Gold did not submit an appeal so the negative ruling will stand. It is unknown if Vista Gold will try to continue the mining project by initiating a new permitting process with new studies.
