The Sierra Mazatán are arguably the southern most Sky Island in the region. The range is isolated from nearby high country, but is not high enough in elevation to have a full assemblage of montane species. This sierra has a granitic core. It is dominated by thorn-scrub and oak woodland at higher elevations.
